A demonstration of faith was manifested at Waskom High Wednesday night. Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Waskom, Dr. Ivy Shelton, led students, coaches, staff and family members in prayer from the Wildcat football field’s 50-yard line, after the conclusion of football practice. Dr. Shelton shared his personal college experiences and an inspirational message of faith and trust in God.
The evening represented ‘Fields of Faith’ gathering. ‘Fields of Faith’ is a national movement. At this student-led event, participants invite, pray for, share with, and challenge their peers to read the Bible and follow Jesus Christ. An athletic field provides a neutral, rally point where a community can come together. This movement was started in 2002 and became a national phenomenon by 2004. A Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) participated in organizing this rally.
The event kicked-off with serving hot dogs, cold drinks and sweet treats. FCA member Jacob Reeves presented a prayer to launch the start of the evening festivities. Organizers and students shared their favorite Bible verses and explained how the Word of God comes alive in their day-to-day experiences.
The ‘Fields of Faith’ was attended by the seemingly ever-present WISD Superintendent Jimmy Cox, Waskom High School FCA, Sponsor Donna Crocker, with Coach Lauren Hale and student organizers Jacob Reeves, Hannah Speight, Camon Phillips, Kennadie Philpot, Ashli Gonzalez and Rachel Payne.
The opening song, “Oceans,” was performed by the FCA group in front of the Waskom Wildcat Stadium stands, full of students, their families and other guests. Rachel Payne read aloud and shared a Bible verse, followed by another song, “We Believe”. The songs and conversations of fellowship were followed by games for the students to enjoy and participate in, with kids of all ages joining in along with parents and friends.
Camon Phillips closed the evening in prayer. ‘Fields of Faith’ blessed the fields of the Wildcat Nation and Waskom High School through this spiritual experience. Dreams come true when planted in the ‘Fields of Faith’ and worship, as a solid spiritual foundation for the young and the young at heart.
